What can you make with jackfruit?

You see it popping up on Instagram, food blogs and at Albert Heijn: jackfruit. While not long ago, no one had even heard of it. Quickly get a can in the house; we’ll tell you right away what you can do with it.

People in Thailand, where jackfruit comes from, know not to sit under a jackfruit tree. A fully grown fruit can weigh as much as 45 kilos. When you remove the prickly layer from the jackfruit, you see lots of large white pods. You eat those. The texture is very meaty, so the fruit is often used in a dish instead of meat. Pulled jackfruit in particular is a huge hit on the internet.

In the Netherlands, you’re most likely to buy a can rather than a fresh fruit. The fruit comes in salted water or sugar syrup; naturally, you use the former for savory dishes. The flavor isn’t very pronounced, so it’s important to marinate it well beforehand. We’re giving you four recipes to experiment with.
Pulled jackfruit
Jackfruit is a good vegetarian substitute for pulled pork, pulled chicken and pulled beef. Everything pulled, really. For example, try a pulled jackfruit burger, with avocado or coleslaw. Or these Mexican tacos with tomato salsa.
Stew
Stew is always a good idea. Flemish-style: “stew” with fries.
Jackfruit curry
Fancy something healthier than fries or a burger? Then this warm, filling curry is exactly what you want.
Sticky coconut rice with jackfruit
To stay close to the jackfruit’s roots: Thai people love eating their sticky rice with something sweet. Sometimes that’s mango, sometimes jackfruit. In Thailand? Order khao niao khunan, or make it yourself if you can find fresh jackfruit.
