5x Mexican in Rotterdam

There’s no shortage of Mexican taquerias and street food bars these days. Add a tequila or a Mexican beer, and we’ll happily stay all evening. These are our favorites in Rotterdam.

Alfredo’s Taqueria
At Alfredo’s, it’s all about tacos and tortas (Mexican sandwiches); eating with your hands only. Great. This brightly colored yet sleekly designed Mexican hangout is the result of a wonderful collaboration between Dennis Ebeli (known for the Oranjebitter Festival and Alfredo Gonzales socks) and Ton van Zanten (co-founder of Dudok and Mart Café). Dennis traveled especially to Mexico City, where he gathered all his cultural and culinary inspiration by bike.
Kua
The building that formerly housed La Taqueria was taken over last year by Kua Mexican Kitchen from The Hague. Originally from Mexico, Daniel Muñoz opened Kua’s first location several years ago because he felt that there was little ‘real Mexican’ food available in the Netherlands. Besides pulled pork and beef steak tortillas, you can also choose from plenty of vegetarian options. For example, with melted cheese, spicy salsa, mushrooms, beans and grilled vegetables.
Amehoela
One of Rotterdam’s most popular newcomers is Amehoela, inspired by the American tiki bars of the 1930s. The menu features a mix of dishes inspired by the South American street food culture of, among others, Mexico City, Havana, Manila, Buenos Aires and Lima. But with a twist of its own. They also serve festive tropical cocktails or a good old Corona or tequila.
Xoco
For those who fancy a quick bite or prefer to have food delivered at home, there’s also the modern Mexican bar Xoco. Here, you can easily choose in four steps: a base (burrito, tacos, rice or salad), a filling (chicken, beef, pork or veggie), a topping (salsa, cheese or vegetables) and a sauce (sour cream, guacamole or roasted chili sauce).
Supermercado
On Rotterdam’s lively nightlife street, Witte de Withstraat, you’ll find colorful Supermercado. Here, you can eat Mexican tacos, enchiladas and nachos, as well as other Latin American street food such as Peruvian ceviche with sea bass and sweet potato, grilled steak and churros with caramel sauce.
