Grilled Cheese Sandwich from De Kat in de Wijngaert

After spending a morning wandering around the Noordermarkt in Amsterdam, you want just one thing: a grilled cheese sandwich from De Kat in de Wijngaert.

De Kat is one of the oldest cafés in the Jordaan. I first came here when I couldn’t talk yet. I was parked in my stroller against the bar. My father drank a beer and ate a grilled cheese sandwich. I was allowed a bite. I was literally and figuratively speechless. I still occasionally have a beer here with my father. I never turn down a grilled cheese sandwich, no matter how many times I visit.
How to order it
Get the grilled cheese sandwich as simple as can be: aged cheese and ham on white bread. The outside of the bread is spread with butter. This makes the sandwich crispy, crunchy and deliciously greasy. The crunch when you take a bite is overwhelming. Perfect. The melted aged cheese is nicely salty. Juicy, thinly sliced ham. Don’t change a thing. Well, maybe order another one.
