Tacos throughout the country

Sometimes Mexican food is all you want. Tacos, for example, are quick, easy, often cheap and oh-so delicious. When they’re good, they’re fresh, spicy and sweet-and-sour. If you’re planning to travel across the country eating tacos, this guide is your ultimate resource.

Amsterdam

Coba Taqueria
You have to make quite an effort to get to this top-notch spot—it requires a gruelling journey right across Amsterdam-Noord. But once you’re there, you’ll never want to leave. The staff are amazing, the atmosphere is great and the food is fantastic. Tortilla with octopus, black bean purée, peanuts and chilli, anyone?

Taqueria Tacobar
A small place tucked away in a residential neighbourhood that’s often packed—especially at the weekend. The tacos are good, fresh and dirt cheap. For five or six euros, you get a generously filled taco, and after two you’ll be full. You can order them vegetarian or with fish, chicken, pork or beef. The pitchers of margaritas are ideal when you’re with a group of friends.

Tomatillo
Here you can get burritos, fajitas, tacos and quesadillas. FavorFlav’s favourite dish is the steak burrito. Perfectly cooked meat, well-seasoned rice and fresh vegetables come together in the rolled-up snack of your dreams.

Rotterdam

Alfredo’s Taqueria
In this colourful spot, as well as the familiar taco, you can also enjoy a good torta (Mexican sandwich). Everything is served on Instagrammable plates. In short, this is where you go for good Mexican street food in a hip package.

Supermercado
Approachable and open until late, so if you want to line your stomach before going out, Supermercado is your best friend. They don’t just serve Mexican food; Peruvian and Argentine cuisine are also well represented.

Utrecht

Chidoz
You can eat there, but you can also take your Mexican snacks with you. The concept is simple and fast. First, choose your base: a burrito, bowl, taco or nachos. Then meat, toppings and sauce. Mix and match to your heart’s content. Everything is fresh and homemade, so you can’t go wrong. You can also find Chidoz in other places around the country; the latest location has just opened in Haarlem.

Lucy Lou
A large restaurant serving Mexican street food. The menu includes, among other things, ten different tacos and 50 types of mezcal and tequila. Yum.

The Hague

Ruiseñor
Think Mexican fusion. Or, as they put it themselves, ‘Mexican emotional cuisine’. They go far beyond tacos and tequila here. You’ll have five, six or seven courses, and the menu is a surprise. Complex dishes, each one a little flavour bomb.
