Where to Get Portuguese Pastries
If there’s one thing they’re good at in Portugal, it’s pastries. Savory, sweet, whatever you like—you go there for baked goods. Or simply stay in the Netherlands, as it turns out. These are the places to go in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and beyond.

Right in the center on Haarlemmerstraat, you’ll find this fantastic Portuguese delicatessen shop. They sell the best of Portugal here, from wine to canned sardines, olive oil and, of course, our favorite pastel de nata.

NATA Lisboa
At NATA Lisboa in Amsterdam, they sell Portuguese pastries in all shapes and sizes, alongside a cup of strong coffee. We’ve been huge fans of the pastel de nata for years—how could we not be, with its crisp, buttery exterior and custard filling?
We had secretly never heard of most of these things before. But a pao com chouriço (a warm roll with chorizo) sounds like something we want to eat immediately. The menu also features pastel de bacalhau (salt cod pastries) and a host of filled sandwiches.

Rotterdam
At Daily Cakes in Rotterdam, the display case is packed with the tastiest Portuguese snacks. Naturally, that includes our favorite custard tarts. But also filled breads with ham and cheese, pizza, moist cake and strawberry pastries.

De Bakkerswinkel
Not entirely in the Portuguese style, but De Bakkerswinkel does sell some damn good pastel de nata. And it has locations all over the country (Utrecht, The Hague, Zoetermeer, Rotterdam and Amsterdam). So you’re never far from a crisp pastry.
