In Italy, people have been drinking it for a century and a half. Hot in winter, cold in summer, but always with a generous dollop of whipped cream on top. This special coffee is named after its inventor, Domenico Barbaja. Around the middle of the nineteenth century, he worked as a waiter in a café in Milan, where he mixed cream and a little chocolate into espresso.

A classic barbajada consists of ingredients you probably already have at home: (strong) coffee, sugar, cream and chocolate. Would you like to give your cup of coffee an Italian chocolate twist? Here’s how to make your own barbajada.
