5 ways to cook with Spam
A bit of a foodie might turn their nose up at tinned pork. Is Spam even meat? Next time you walk past the shelf, take a tin home with you anyway. You really can make something delicious with it. Especially with the new SPAM edition!
Did you know that people in Hawaii eat a lot of the canned stuff? Not because it’s cheap, but because they know how to prepare it. There, they call it spam, after the well-known brand SPAM. More and more American chefs are using it in their dishes too. You just need to know what you can do with it, and then the world is your oyster — all for just €2.80.
Egg slut sandwich
This video put Spam on my radar a few years ago. This over-the-top breakfast sandwich looks so incredible, it has to taste good, right? And sure enough: crispy and greasy, it leaves a slice of ham standing. Next time you have a hangover, make this sandwich.
Ramen
Maybe you’re used to topping your ramen with slices of slow-cooked pork belly, but try it with spam. Just like pork belly, it has a high fat content, so the fat deliciously drips into the broth. Delicious!
Fried rice
And yes, Spam is fantastic in fried rice too. It’s a little fattier and firmer than regular ham, which makes it fry up wonderfully crisp. Give it a try — you won’t regret it.
Musubi
The Hawaiian poké bowl is everywhere by now, but what about musubi? In Hawaii, they simply make their sushi with Spam — yes, this weird sushi takes some getting used to — and it’s actually pretty delicious.
Noodles
Another Asian hybrid: garlic noodles with crispy Spam. Carbs, garlic and fatty pork — what more could you want?
SPAM Gochujang
But perhaps the most delicious of all: SPAM is launching a gochujang edition! There was already a SPAM Korean BBQ flavor, but with the Korean flavor enhancer gochujang, SPAM is taking things a step further. Spicy, sweet, salty and umami all come together in this tin of deliciousness. It has a spicy kick and is perfect for dishes such as so-tteok so-tteok (a popular South Korean street-food dish consisting of sausages and rice cakes with gochujang), kimchi fried rice, bulgogi or for spicing up your ramen.
It’s also — there it is again — delicious in musubi and on the grill. No wonder SPAM fans are raving about it on social media. For now, this new SPAM is available at Costco. Fingers crossed that we’ll be able to buy it here soon too. Because as I said: once you know what you can do with it, the world is your oyster.
