6x how to easily save money on food

The expensive month of December is over. In January, we all too gladly keep our wallets in our pockets. To help you a little with that, we’ve put together the six best ways to save money on food:

Do you really need it?

Don’t buy a random ingredient for a recipe if you only need one teaspoon of it. When a recipe is as long as a parchment scroll, you can definitely skip a few things. The ingredients you’re sure will come in handy later are worth buying.

Mirror it

Make sure your fridge is mirrored: organise your food by expiry date. First in, first out is your new motto this year when it comes to the fridge. That way, you won’t have to throw anything away and you’ll get the most out of the things you buy.

Breakfast for dinner

Having breakfast for dinner every now and then is perfectly fine. When you get home after that long day at work and a horrible, rainy bike ride, you don’t feel like cooking at all, do you? A simple omelette or fried egg works wonders.

Value packs

Buy large packs intended for an entire family and freeze whatever you don’t use right away. In fact, freeze everything. It’ll save you a lot of money, and next time you won’t have to go to the supermarket to get food either.

Being penny-pinchers

Do it the Dutch way: always check your receipts. We already have that great reputation for being penny-pinchers, so we might as well live up to it. People make mistakes, and cashiers do too. Who knows, you might still save a few euros on a special offer that hasn’t been included yet.

Avoid ready-made food

Don’t buy ready-made salads; you can prepare them yourself in five minutes and it’ll cost you half as much. They also often contain loads of sugar in the sauces and dressings—not tasty and not good for you either.
