You can quickly win everyone over with an expensive product or complicated preparation method, but sometimes it’s a simple, humble product that you’re actually craving most. Right? That’s why today we’re paying tribute to a sauce that goes with everything: garlic sauce.

Ever since I went to barbecues as a child, surrounded by sauces, I knew how things stood: garlic sauce is the only sauce that matters, and it tastes good with everything. Sausages, spareribs, chicken wings, baguette—everything from the barbecue tastes better with very large quantities of garlic sauce. Just the bottled kind, yes.

The Tastiest Garlic Sauce

When supermarket chain DEEN was taken over by Albert Heijn years ago… panic! Would Albert Heijn actually add DEEN’s famous garlic sauce to its own range? Fans of the sauce even started a petition. Quinten Warner from Purmerend was the frontman of the garlic fans and collected more than four thousand signatures. It worked, because Albert Heijn announced that the iconic garlic sauce would remain in its range. So here’s a tip if you haven’t found your way to the tastiest garlic sauce yet.

Pita with Sauce

These days I don’t go to this kind of sauce-laden barbecue feast as often, but my love for garlic sauce certainly hasn’t diminished. A pita bread with something and garlic sauce is still a firm favorite. I eat a falafel sandwich, spiced chicken, gyros or roasted eggplant with garlic sauce at least once a week. Unlike Quinten, I usually make it myself, but still in enormous quantities.

Bite, More Sauce, Bite, More Sauce…

I spread it on the bread before adding the rest of the ingredients, and then on top as well. Once I’ve eaten the top, there obviously has to be another thick layer for the next few bites. In fact, I don’t really care what the filling is; I just want bread with garlic sauce. Even when I’m eating a large shawarma sandwich drunk in the middle of the night, I always have the squeeze bottle (of course!) in my hand.

Bite, more sauce, bite, more sauce… until the entire sandwich is gone.
