Don’t throw away your avocado pit, grate it!

avocados

You usually just toss that avocado pit straight into the bin, right after the peel. Not anymore. You won’t need nutmeg anymore, because you can grate that bitter avocado pit over your dishes just fine.

Healthy?

Delicious, that avocado toast, and you can even grate a little of your avocado pit over it. Double avo! If you look up whether eating an avocado pit is actually healthy, you’ll find all sorts of different healthy stories. Apparently, it helps with intestinal problems, makes you lose weight and is said to lower your cholesterol. By the way, we can’t find any solid evidence to support all those theories. You can, however, use the pit very well as a seasoning instead of nutmeg.

Grating

First remove the brown skin from the pit. Then grate the pit into a powder or use a food processor (make sure your food processor has sharp blades, otherwise you’ll only break it). Grating the pit is easier if you first let it dry on a sunny windowsill or use a dehydrator. You can grate the bitter pit over all the dishes you would normally use nutmeg for, but don’t use too much. It can be rather overpowering. Happy grating!
