These Avocados Stay Good for a Month

Just imagine if your avocados stayed good for an entire month. No more dried-out, bruised, stringy, brown avocados in your fruit bowl, but avocados that are just as beautiful, full and creamy as when you bought them. Utopia? Nope!

There is now a spray that allows avocados (and other fruit and vegetables) to stay good for longer. It is already being used in America; in Europe, they are still waiting for approval.

Dutch fruit and vegetable supplier Nature’s Pride — which supplies approximately one-third of Dutch supermarkets with their ready-to-eat avocados — has already announced that it will work together with Apeel, the American company developing the sprays.

Extra skin

The spray is made up of substances that are normally also found in the skin of a fruit. They create an ‘extra skin’ that slows down water loss and oxidation, allowing the avocados to stay good for longer. The Apeel layer is edible and has no taste, smell or color.

Nature’s Pride hopes to bring the first ‘longer-lasting’ avocados to European supermarkets halfway through 2019. It is not yet known whether the avocados with the ‘Apeel’ sticker will also be sold in Dutch stores.

Sustainable

In due course, Nature’s Pride also hopes to treat green asparagus with the spray. “They currently travel by plane. If they are treated with this, they can also be transported by boat. That reduces the footprint,” says Adriëlle Dankier of Nature’s Pride in AD.

So the spray is not only convenient for consumers, but can also have a positive impact on the entire logistics chain: the products stay fresh for longer, can therefore be transported in a less polluting way and need to be thrown away less often at the supermarket. Win-win-win.
