Seven Snack Names You Need to Know
The discodip frikandel is the hit in Nijmegen. And yes, it’s exactly what you think. A frikandel with extra mayonnaise, sprinkled with discodip. Here are seven more special snacks.
Broodje boef
At snack bar ‘t Hoekje in Utrecht, ask for a broodje boef when you want a sandwich with kaassoufflé, satay sauce and onions. In Nijmegen, they call it ‘spee’. Why? Simply because it rolls off the tongue nicely.
Een horizontaaltje
When your wallet is, on a rare occasion, filled with euro coins, you get a horizontaaltje. Shamelessly give in to your hunger and get every snack from the vending wall, from left to right.
Patatje halfom
This fries is served with mayonnaise and piccalilli. Sweet, sour and salty, and therefore extra addictive. The term is less well known, but hey, that way you can teach the fry vendor something new too.

After ordering that, you can go water cycling for a few laps to work it off. What needs to be worked off? Fries, two frikandellen and sauce. The whole thing is topped with one final scoop of fries. This name gives little away, unless Mr. Peeters always eats his fries this way. Served with ketchup and mustard.
