Spice it up

chicken wings

The FavorFlav editorial team isn’t afraid of a serious amount of heat. So naturally, our cupboards are packed with flavour boosters that give every dish that extra kick. Here are three favourites you can pick straight off the shelf.

Lekker Bekkie

Lekker Bekkie’s chutneys are very spicy—and by very spicy, we mean tear-inducing spicy. No, these cheerful jars aren’t for people who ‘like things with just a little heat’. This is for the diehards. The mango chutney is a favourite. Delicious on a peanut butter sandwich with slices of cucumber, stirred into your egg salad, or used to marinate chicken for the barbecue. What makes this chutney so spicy? That would be the famous yellow Madame Jeanette pepper. And since you’re buying Lekker Bekkie anyway, toss the Madame Jeanette piccalilli into your basket too. It gives your kale and potato mash just the kick it needs.

Sriracha

Suddenly, it was everywhere: the transparent bottle with the green cap, filled with red sauce. Sriracha has meanwhile become a must-have in many home kitchens. A squeeze in your noodle soup, mixed with mayonnaise for dipping your toasted sandwich, a generous dollop on your fish taco—and we could go on. The Thai sauce is made with red peppers, vinegar, salt and sugar, and tastes wonderfully spicy, fresh and sour all at once.

Tabasco Chipotle

We all know classic Tabasco, but did you know the famous brand also sells variations on the red bottle? The chipotle version comes highly recommended. Its flavour is smoky and deep, making it perfect for barbecue sauce. Bring on those perfect ribs, grilled chicken and incredible burgers. Chipotles are ripe jalapeño peppers (you’re probably familiar with the unripe green variety). The ripe red peppers are picked and smoked for several days. The smoking process removes all the moisture, leaving you with a dried pepper.
