The ultimate cheap indulgence: you have to try this!

I don’t actually believe in guilty pleasures. Why should you feel guilty if you really enjoy something? Even if others might not consider it ‘culinary’ enough or it contains a million calories. And yet I’ve had one of my own lately. The one indulgence I almost don’t dare share with people is an incredibly cheap supermarket dessert.

These days, you can reach for all kinds of fancy, expensive desserts in the dairy aisle, and of course I prefer to make everything myself. But recently I discovered De Zaanse Hoeve’s rice dessert, and every time I walk past it, I want to take one home. Not only does it cost just 55 cents and therefore fit into any budget menu, it’s also incredibly deliciously disgusting.

Perfectly artificial
The tub is filled with 200 grams of rice and vanilla pleasure, with the texture of a kind of custard or pudding. Not a vanilla bean in sight. But it is perfectly cooked, still slightly chewy, so I really don’t care. It’s loaded with the flavor of sugar and artificial vanilla extract. The whole thing wouldn’t be complete without the beautiful yellow coloring, which may make it taste even better. The eye wants something too.

When I told FavorFlav’s Marieke about my secret discovery, she immediately put her hand over her mouth. She had eaten it recently too, but didn’t dare tell anyone how much she enjoyed it. So here it is, once and for all: buy a rice dessert and shout it from the rooftops.
