These kitchen tools should be replaced every year

Whether it’s about hygiene or ease of use, not everything in the kitchen lasts forever. You may think your kitchen tools are a lifetime investment, but these items are best replaced annually.

Cutting board

Wood or plastic: no matter how well you maintain and clean your cutting board, boards are a breeding ground for bacteria. To extend the lifespan of your boards a little, you can use different boards for meat, fish and vegetables, but even then they can’t be used indefinitely. In that case, replace your boards every two years; otherwise, after one year.

Microplane

For us, there’s no other grater than the Microplane. If you ever need to think of a gift for someone: anyone who enjoys food even a little will be happy with one of these. Still, it’s at its sharpest when you first buy it. The more you use it, the blunter it becomes. You have your knives sharpened, but you can’t do that with your Microplane. So every now and then, you really need to buy a new one.

Vegetable peeler

Do those potato peels keep getting caught in your vegetable peeler? Chances are the blades have become blunt and it’s due for replacement. Luckily, they’re inexpensive; for a few euros, you can already get a good one. Don’t be tempted to buy an expensive one—keep the turnover nice and high.

Tea towels

Another place where bacteria love to settle is a tea towel. No matter how hot you wash them, at some point it really is time for a replacement. This also applies to sponges and yellow cleaning cloths.

Storage containers

I can’t count how many containers I’ve lost over the years because I gave friends leftovers to take home. And how annoying that is! It’s not necessary at all, because it’s actually best to replace these things from time to time. If you don’t have a dishwasher, greasy layers and certain smells are virtually impossible to remove anyway, so off to the shop!
