This is how you become a food writer

Has it always been your dream to write down your culinary ideas? Perhaps you want to start a blog, write reviews for a newspaper or publish your own cookbook. But where on earth do you start? In these culinary writing courses, you’ll be taught by the pros.

Editio
At Editio, you can choose from three different culinary writing courses. Mr. Wateetons teaches you how to write critically about the sense and nonsense of food trends. He regularly examines food trends down to the last detail. If you want to write about wine, the wine writing course taught by Harold Hamersma is the right choice for you. Naturally, you’ll also learn how to taste and judge wine. In short: everything you need to know to write a good wine review.
Would you rather publish your own cookbook? During Jonah Freud’s (De Kookboekhandel) cookbook-making course, you’ll learn, among other things, how to write recipes and choose images. The courses last four weeks, are suitable for both beginners and advanced writers, and cost €335,-.
Academie Culinair en Wijnschrijven
This is the place to go if you want to learn to write from none other than Onno Kleyn (De Grote Kleyn, de Volkskeuken). Considering the number of books, recipes, reviews and other culinary essays he has written, the man certainly knows his culinary stuff. Here, you can choose between wine writing and culinary writing. In a group setting, you’ll attend two lectures by Onno Kleyn himself, and do the rest online. A culinary or wine writing course costs €595,-.
Would you prefer private lessons? You can also take an individual course. You won’t attend lectures, but will receive assignments and feedback via Skype and/or email. If you do well, you may be admitted to the advanced course. The private course costs €597,-.
ELLE Eten x Fontys
Would you like to learn all aspects of writing about food, both online and offline? Then ELLE Eten’s Food Journalism course, in collaboration with Fontys University of Applied Sciences, might be for you. During this 10-week classroom-based course, you’ll also go on excursions and be taught by big names in the field. For example, you’ll brainstorm with Klaartje Scheepers (editor-in-chief of ELLE Eten), learn to write reviews from Hiske Versprille (culinary reviewer at Het Parool), and learn all about food photography and styling from food stylist Claartje Lindhout.
The Fontys course is currently full, but you can register to be kept informed about the next edition. The cost of this course is €1250,-.
