Throwing Away Moldy Food: Yes or No?

You were just craving a delicious piece of cheese, but as soon as you want to cut into it, you see that a large, fluffy blue spot has started growing on it. Luckily, you can simply cut it off. Or can you? What exactly is the deal with mold on your food? FavorFlav investigated it for you.

According to the Voedingscentrum, cheese is the only product where you can cut away the mold. So you should throw away all other food as soon as mold starts growing on it. Apparently, it can make you seriously ill. But still: we think it’s a shame to throw away your food immediately as soon as something even slightly fluffy starts appearing on it. What’s the sensible thing to do?
There are American researchers who believe that you can simply still eat food once it has become moldy. Of course, you should cut away the mold first. So we still happily use a pumpkin or carrot with a small patch of mold.
Fluffy
You don’t have to throw away a loaf of bread just because one slice seems a little fluffy, either. Or take blueberries: if one is no longer good, the rest are usually still perfectly fine. Besides, mushrooms are fungi too, and blue cheese couldn’t exist without them. Mold is even injected into it. Of course, moldy food can make you ill, but we’ve never noticed anything ourselves. As long as you cut away the mold, there’s generally nothing to worry about. So go ahead and enjoy it.
