What fruit used to look like

Banaan

If you thought that all the fruit we eat today has always looked this way, you’re very much mistaken. Since humans began cultivating and modifying crops, quite a few types of fruit have had a makeover. Business Insider shows it in this video.

Carrot

Carrots used to be purple, white and thin, and had a very strong flavor. Now they are thick, orange and crunchy. Eggplants had spines and were blue or yellow; some were round. By now, they are purple and oval.

Corn

Corn cobs were as dry as a raw potato and looked very different. Modern corn was first cultivated in modified form in Mexico 8,000 years ago. Our modern corn is much larger and easier to grow and harvest.

Watermelon

In the video, you see a watermelon in a seventeenth-century painting. The seeds were arranged in separate sections inside the melon. Today’s melon has a bright-red interior and sometimes doesn’t even contain seeds. Bananas used to be hard and contained large seeds, so they too have undergone quite a transformation.
