10 supermarket cashier annoyances you’re probably guilty of too

Aan de kassa Dirk supermarkt

Oh, those poor supermarket cashiers. They scan your groceries, patiently wait until you finally find your debit card and sometimes even laugh at your lame jokes. But believe us: there are also things that annoy them intensely. Want to do cashiers a favor? Read this list of ultimate annoyances and learn what you should definitely not do in the supermarket from now on.

These things really drive supermarket cashiers crazy

1. Making a phone call while checking out

Your groceries are being scanned, but you’re just chatting away on your phone. No “hi,” no “have a nice shift,” just an irritated cashier mentally giving you a red card.

2. Paying with endless coins

“That’ll be €14.45, would you like to pay by card or cash?” Cue: a handful of €1 coins, 50-cent coins and 10-cent coins. Counting them takes longer than the checkout line on Christmas Eve.

3. The wallet searcher

The store is busy, everything has been scanned… but where is that wallet? Ah, found it. In the meantime, five customers behind you have turned into bubbling volcanoes of frustration.

4. Closing-time slow shoppers

It’s 7:57 p.m. and the store closes at 8:00 p.m. You’re the last customer and decide to do all your weekly shopping. Spoiler: the cashier is not a fan.

5. The forgotten bag

Everything has been paid for, the next customer has already started… and then you remember that you need a bag. Nice try, but unfortunately: it’s not free. It costs 50 cents for you too.

6. Warm coins

Scorching-hot coins placed straight into the cashier’s hand. Seriously, this ranks very high on supermarket cashiers’ list of gross things during work.

7. The forgotten product

Groceries are on the conveyor belt and suddenly: “Oh, I just need to grab something!” The rest of the line can wait patiently while you sprint through the entire supermarket.

8. Mental arithmetic on command

You pay €6.50 with a €10 note. The cashier enters it, and then… you suddenly hand over another €1.50. Well-intentioned, but in checkout land this causes mild panic. Mental arithmetic isn’t equally easy for everyone, and with an entire line waiting, the pressure only increases.

9. The endless receipt jokes

“Would you like the receipt?” answered with: “Just hang it above your bed!” The joke is old. Very old. So old that cashiers can probably dream about it in their sleep. All variations on it too, by the way.

10. Being too chummy

Just because you often stand at the same checkout doesn’t make you best friends. A friendly smile is politeness, not an invitation to intense social contact.

How to make supermarket cashiers happy instead

It doesn’t take much, they unanimously say. Say hello, pay by card when you can, keep your wallet handy and save your jokes for later. That way, you’ll go from supermarket nuisance to every cashier’s favorite customer.

5 tips for becoming the supermarket cashier’s favorite customer

  1. Simply say “hello” and “thank you.” Sounds simple, but politeness always earns points.
  2. Have your debit card or wallet ready. That way, nobody behind you has to sigh impatiently.
  3. Save your stand-up comedy for later. The “just hang it above your bed” joke has officially retired.
  4. Pay by card instead of counting coins. It saves time, frustration and warm fingers.
  5. Don’t be a closing-time shopper. Come on time so the cashier can go home on time too.
