Yuck: fried chicken turns out to be a fried towel
Alique Perez ordered a hamburger for herself and fried chicken for her son. The chicken was tough, and when she couldn’t get through it with a knife, she saw the problem. The crispy chicken fillet turned out to be… a fried towel.
The Filipino fast-food chain Jollibee is famous for its crispy fried chicken, and that was exactly what Alique’s son was craving. But cutting that golden-brown crispy chicken fillet was difficult; even a knife couldn’t get through the chicken snack. When Alique tried to tear the chicken apart with her hands, she couldn’t believe her eyes: beneath the crispy fried crust was… a blue towel. Yuck! ‘How on earth do you manage to bread a towel and then fry it as well?’ she asks in horror in the Facebook post she dedicated to her complaint.
Exaggerated stories?
Fast-food orders often go well, but sometimes things go wrong. Alique had always thought the stories about a thumb in a can of Coke or a mouse in a brown sliced loaf were a little exaggerated. And now it has happened to her! ‘I simply can’t believe it,’ she writes. ‘I don’t want any more chicken nuggets either. The thought that that towel was fried, and that other snacks were also prepared in the same oil, is so disgusting.’
Hefty fine
Jollibee has responded to her complaint. The branch where the unusual order came from has been temporarily closed, and the company will increase its quality controls. In the Philippines, restaurants that make such mistakes can receive a $6,300 fine from the food and product authority, and the establishment can be forced to close for six months. The Jollibee chain is hugely popular in the Philippines, with 1,150 branches in the country—more than McDonald’s. The chain also operates in the United States and Canada, but not in Europe.
