McDonald’s is doing something with the spoons and straws and customers are not amused

McDonald’s is putting wooden spoons in the McFlurry – and the internet is going crazy. Seriously. The plastic spoons at McDonald’s are a thing of the past; the supersnacker has switched to wooden spoons for its ice creams. Better for the environment, says the chain. But not all customers agree: Facebook went into a frenzy over this change in nearly nine thousand posts. They think the wooden spoon makes the entire ice cream taste like wood.

By replacing the plastic spoons in the McFlurry and other ice creams with wooden spoons, 102,000 kilos less plastic will be thrown away every year. Add to that the 125,000 kilos less plastic straws thrown away each year, because Maccie already replaced those with paper straws in 2020, and you get the picture: the golden arches are well on their way. The company aims to make all product packaging from sustainable and recyclable materials by 2025, and to recycle 90 percent of its waste. Green and all that—good job!
Horror straws
But Facebook followers feel differently. They think those paper straws are horrible and don’t want to eat their ice cream with a wooden spoon. All the commenters think the ice creams will taste like wood, while the paper straws turn into mush in iced coffee or cola. What are you supposed to do?
Cup lid
Some people recommend keeping plastic spoons in the glove compartment, so you always have a supply when you get a craving for an ice cream from McDonald’s while on the road. Simply bringing a spoon from home and washing it at home after use is also mentioned as a solution. And the problem with those paper straws? Cover the lid of the soft drink cup and simply drink it that way. Surely we can all drink from a cup?
