Whoa, wait, stop: wine glasses in the dishwasher? Surely that’s not a good idea at all? No, sometimes it isn’t. If you’re still serving wine in water glasses like a student, it’s fine. But genuinely expensive wine glasses made of thin glass don’t cope very well with extremely hot water and powerful spray jets, and to keep them looking beautiful (and intact) and prevent limescale, it’s better to wash them by hand in lukewarm water. But I really do always put ordinary wine glasses in my dishwasher. With a great deal of fanfare, admittedly, because why do those damn things never fit?!

Glass in your machine: hell

But ha, apparently they do! FavorFlav’s Adeline nearly went crazy with excitement when she discovered the lifehack of her life. The thing is, she too is always struggling with wine glasses in the dishwasher. You know the drill: they almost fit, but not quite, and they’re too fragile to simply toss loose into the bottom. (Besides, have you ever had glass in your dishwasher? Misery! I believe it’s the most common reason a repair technician has to come by, because naturally there’s some wretched little piece of glass stuck somewhere you can’t reach yourself, and your machine refuses to do anything at all anymore – yes, I’m speaking from experience.)

And so, after an evening of wine tasting, you’re still left washing dozens of glasses by hand and then polishing them. Meanwhile, your dishwasher is humming away, rubbing it all in. With this hack, all of that will be a thing of the past.

Lower that thing

Your dishwasher simply has a feature (!) that lets you lower the entire rack by the full length of a wine glass stem. What an invention. And apparently there are people who already knew this. People, share this knowledge with us. Don’t assume we know this already; for years, we’ve been washing glasses until deep into the night after birthday parties. Or, let’s be honest, maybe the next morning with a very groggy head. Sharing is caring, as this proves once again. Just take a look at how to lower that rack by an entire level.

Glasses like new: Steradent!

And while we’re at it, do you know what’s also a real lifehack? Steradent. Really! Among sommeliers, it has been a ‘secret’ for years; Steradent, intended for cleaning dentures, is ideal for cleaning glassware and decanters. Take a large tub of warm water and add a tablet or some powder. Put the glasses in and let them soak for fifteen minutes. Polish them nicely and they’ll be as good as new.

Now all that’s left is to stock up on some wine. Tip: Maison Saint Aix has launched two new wines: AIX White and alcohol-free sparkling rosé BEAU VIVA.
