Roll up your sleeves: this is how much beer we need to drink to save the hospitality industry
Are you also doing everything you can, as far as your wallet allows, to support the hospitality industry? So are we, and we feel for all the entrepreneurs and employees who are working so incredibly hard right now to make the best of things again. And that sympathy really doesn’t have to consist solely of sentiment, you can also just go and drink some beer for a good cause!
In fact, EditieNL has found out exactly how many beers you would have to drink to do your bit towards solving one of the problems hospitality business owners are currently facing. And, um, it’s quite a lot, so don’t try to get this sorted for them within a month. But it is a pretty good indication!
Sky-high debts
ABN AMRO conducted research based on CBS data and transaction data, and calculated that a quarter of the hospitality sector has incurred tax debt because of coronavirus. This concerns 16,000 businesses with a combined debt of 943 million euros.
A sea of beer
That’s news to get depressed over your kopstootje. But to make it a little more manageable (or swallowable), Knab financial expert Oskar Barendse calculated how many beers we would actually have to drink per person (over 18!) to help entrepreneurs settle this tax debt. Here it comes: 223. Yep, two hundred and twenty-three; there isn’t one 2 too many in there. Start building a base; deviled eggs are a very good idea.
A long way to go
Hospitality entrepreneur Khalid Oubaha also had his say, noting that it would be very nice if guests tried to do their bit in this way, but that unfortunately it still wouldn’t be enough to keep a business afloat. “Because besides paying taxes, you also need to have money left over for other things…[but] what this sum and this number of beers show very clearly is that truly large amounts of money have been lost. It shows that we’re still nowhere near there yet,” he tells EditieNL.
So folks, we know what we have to do. Roll up your sleeves, loosen your belt by one notch, go forth and eat and drink! All for the greater good…
