10 supermarket irritations—does yours make the list too?

The supermarket isn’t just the place to do your (ridiculously expensive…) grocery shopping; it’s also the place where you sometimes really have to count to ten. Because seriously: haven’t you already had a great day, you can certainly have a laugh here too. Can we have a moan for a moment: these are our biggest supermarket pet peeves. Does yours make the list too?

Lost in space

Those shopping carts parked in the middle of the aisle—with no driver. Hello, you’re not the only person in the world.

Blocked

I used to be a shelf stacker, so I know the struggle. But I also know that you have to keep putting your empty boxes away. Great that the shelves are being well stocked, but it’s nice when, as a customer, you don’t have to break your neck over boxes blocking the way everywhere. Yes, I’m speaking from experience here too..

Not a skate park

It’s very cute that Fleur has a new Barbie scooter and Finn can finally rollerblade, but children rollerblading and scooting through the store are pretty irritating.

‘You can go ahead’—NOT

You’re one egg short for your cake and quickly dash into the supermarket for a carton of eggs, but there’s a queue at every checkout and nobody says: ‘Go ahead, with your eggs.’ MOOD.

Take your time

Those people who pack everything extremely slowly and only pay once everything has been packed. Is there anyone who doesn’t find this irritating?

Extra checkout pls

A mile-long queue and no extra checkout opening. And yet there are supermarket employees walking around everywhere. Frustrating.

Beep, beep, beeeeeep

When you’re in a massive hurry, all the self-checkouts are occupied, and you pay at a checkout with a cashier who scans veeeeeeery sloooooowly.

Blah blah blah

Customers who run into an acquaintance and give an extensive report on what they ate yesterday and what their plans are for the weekend… And then they do it right in front of the section you need, because that’s where the cheese happens to be. Could you two go have your little chat somewhere else?

Discount or not?

Groceries are shockingly expensive these days, so if I can get a discount, I won’t pass it up. But seriously: do they even enter those 35%-off stickers or other discount stickers into the system at all? Seriously: 8 times out of 10, the regular price is simply charged. Exhausting.

Packed neatly

You’ve packed all your groceries very neatly after scanning them yourself, with all the light items on top of the heavy ones, and an employee checks your shopping and then thoughtlessly chucks everything back into your bag. After a random check like that, I always arrive home with squashed groceries. Crushed lettuce, dented apples, yoghurt that’s been squeezed out of shape or folded cheese—there’s always something. First world problems, but still: irritating.
