10x sugar is hiding here too – you didn’t know that

If you’re trying to eat less sugar, you’ve probably poured the cola down the drain and left the caramels on the supermarket shelf. But – surprise, surprise – there are products that contain sugar, even though you wouldn’t expect it. These products contain sugar, and they don’t even taste sweet!

Meat and cold cuts
Strange but true: frankfurters, salami, ham and luncheon meat all contain sugar. Other cold cuts may also contain sugar. The packaging says dextrose, but don’t be fooled: that’s just sugar.
Hamburgers
Made from minced meat, you think? Wrong: if you buy them ready-made, there’s a whole lot more in them than just meat and some herbs. Potatoes, for example, and… sugar, disguised as glucose syrup or maltodextrin.
Light products
It’s really a case of being caught between a rock and a hard place: if you want to eat fewer calories and buy a light product because it says ‘Less fat’, there’s a chance sugar has been added to give it a better taste.
Jarred vegetables
Critical food magazine Foodwatch investigated vegetables in jars and discovered that a jar of red cabbage contained no less than ten grams of sugar. Added to give the vegetables a sweeter taste.
Soup
Soup from a can, jar or packet contains not only quite a lot of salt, but also a considerable amount of sugar. Come on, just make a delicious soup yourself—it’s much better!
Coffee creamer
Do you add powdered creamer to your coffee? Milk has never been anywhere near it; it’s mainly coconut fat and sugar.
Bread
Those white bread rolls may taste slightly sweet, but even the dark brown bread packed with grains and seeds, which you thought was really healthy, can contain sugar. Check the packaging!
Crackers
Breakfast crackers, wholegrain and packed with all kinds of grains? Check the ingredients list carefully, because sometimes they still contain sugar. Surely that’s not necessary?
Jarred pesto
For starters: hardly any basil, but probably spinach. Because it’s cheaper. And then a spoonful of sugar on top of that. No thanks, we’ll just make pesto ourselves.
Guacamole
Another example is a can of guacamole. It contains shockingly little avocado, and plenty of… sugar.
