10x really disgusting things customers do according to supermarket employees

Life as a supermarket employee is no bed of roses. That became clear once we gave our anonymous sources the chance to speak about their customers. There seems to be quite a bit of suffering when it comes to hygiene. Read on and shudder.

With your hands?
‘Why do people take bread rolls from the tray with their hands?? Can we really all stop doing that now? The tongs are there for a reason.’

Going bad
‘Some people are really incredibly lazy and don’t think things through. They take a product from the refrigerated section, but then no longer need it. You would think the customer would neatly put it back in the refrigerator. Unfortunately, nothing could be further from the truth… Out of sheer laziness, these products are simply put back on a regular shelf. Just randomly, by the candy or something. The carton of milk then sits there warming up nicely until someone is wise enough to remove it. Even though it’s really very simple: if you don’t put a carton of milk in the refrigerator, it will go bad. So don’t do it anymore.’
Warm coins
‘When a customer is about to pay and puts a whole bunch of those warm coins in your hand… Ugh!’
Sneezing
‘You would think everyone knows by now that you should sneeze into your elbow, but spend a day with us and you won’t be able to count the people who sneeze into their hands on one hand. Of course, they then touch everything with that same hand they sneezed into. Including the money that YOU are subsequently handed.’
Coughing
‘Why do some people cough next level?! And then over the freshly baked croissants, too?! From now on, please take a step back and just cough into your elbow, please.’
On the floor
‘What I find really disgusting is people throwing their dirty tissues or face masks on the floor. The trash can is literally within arm’s reach. But apparently that’s too much to ask of some customers…’
Squeezing
‘That squeezing of fruit, especially avocados and mangoes, and even more so during COVID… People who use their entire hand to test whether it’s edible yet. It really won’t ripen any faster from all that hard squeezing. It will bruise, though, and it isn’t exactly hygienic to touch everything with your hands.’
Dirty restroom
‘Of course, suddenly needing to use the restroom while shopping can happen. But why leave the restroom as if a mini-war has just taken place? Toilet paper is everywhere, and let’s not even mention the skid marks… You don’t do that at home either, so why here?’
Wet fingers
‘People who pay in cash and then wet their finger to pick out the right bill. And then lick another finger to hand the right bill to you, yuck.’
Hungry
‘Shopping while hungry and then already starting to eat what you’re buying. And then there are people who put half-eaten apples with stickers on the conveyor belt, which you then have to pick up to scan. You really must be out of your mind, right? So disgusting!’
