11 brilliant things you can do with salt besides adding flavor
Salt is indispensable in the kitchen. But you probably didn’t know you could also use it for these things? From wilted lettuce to greasy pans, make the most of it!
A pinch of salt in your coffee
Is your coffee too bitter? Add a tiny bit of salt. And? Better?
Stop the itch
Bee sting? Mosquito bite? Or fallen into stinging nettles? Rub the itchy bump with a paste made from salt and water, rinse it off, and then apply a little oil. Goodbye, itch!
Fogged-up windows
Are your windows freezing shut? You can easily do something about that. Clean your window with warm water in which you’ve dissolved some salt, and they won’t freeze shut as quickly. Handy for the car!
Grimy sponge
Has your kitchen sponge become discolored from grease and grime? Soak it overnight in a bowl of salt water, and it’ll be as good as new. Then run it through the washing machine, because you can’t leave a pan sponge on the counter forever.

The black soleplate on your iron looks awful, and it doesn’t look very clean either. With a little salt, you can scrub it shiny clean again. Sprinkle the salt over an old newspaper, and ‘iron’ the salted newspaper with your dirty iron. Problem solved!
Smelly sneakers
Seriously: walking around in sneakers with bare feet is simply a bad idea. Especially in summer, you’ll end up with a pair of stinky sneakers that are enough to scare you. Sprinkle a generous tablespoon of salt into your sweaty sneaker and leave it overnight. The next day, throw away the salt and your sneaker will be fresh and clean again.
