Natalie Sideserf is the kind of home baker who loves setting herself a challenge. In her kitchen in Austin, Texas, she makes YouTube videos showing how she creates those bizarrely realistic cakes. They even have a remarkably calming effect on people who can’t make a simple mug cake yet.
Thumbs-ups and hearts
It all started for Natalie in 2008, when she made a cake for a friend. She had seen those beautiful cakes on television, so she figured she could do it too. The fact that she was also attending art school may explain her confidence. One thing led to another, as they say, and Natalie now has her own cake business and works at a local bakery. The thumbs-ups, likes and hearts on social media gave Natalie the idea that she might actually be pretty good at baking cakes, just like those other cake-baking hits on the internet. These days, she earns a lot of money from advertising revenue on those same social media platforms. And all those cakes—what does she do with them? She shares them with neighbours and friends, because she says she could never eat all the cakes she bakes herself.
