Gulliver’s cakes are a wonderful miniature world

Tiny people skating across a shiny layer of icing, swimmers crawling through the tiramisu and a toy crew ploughing furrows in a cream cake: the cakes by Matteo Stucchi of Il Dolce di Gulliver are actually miniature worlds in their own right.

He spends 2 to 4 hours on each cake, and then he still has to take a photo. He finds inspiration in the dishes themselves, and sometimes in things he sees on social media. The little figurines he uses also occasionally give him the idea to bake a cake for them.

The wonderful end result gives him a buzz. ‘But I don’t mind tasting things while baking either.’ His tip for aspiring bakers? ‘Never give up,’ he says. ‘Sometimes something doesn’t work when you make it for the first time, but then you simply have to roll up your sleeves and start again. At some point, it will work.’
