12 things Starbucks baristas absolutely hate

Starbucks-Favorflav

Great music, fun colleagues and being no more than five metres away from that heavenly millionaire’s shortbread in the display case all day long – working at Starbucks seems like a sweet job. But online, you can see the other side of the coin: the customers, those terrible customers. These are the twelve things Starbucks baristas really hate (and it probably isn’t much different at Coffee Company).

Loose change isn’t confetti

Some people use loose change as a kind of confetti and toss it onto the counter in an arc. It’s annoying to have to grab all those coins together. But: getting hot money in your hand feels just like a dog peeing against your leg, so don’t do that either. There’s bound to be a bowl or saucer to put the money in. And don’t forget the tip jar, where you can get rid of those loose ten-cent coins.

Whose turn is it?

Peak rush hour, a long queue at the tills, and still having to call out three or four times: ‘Who can I help?’ and ‘Next customer, please!’

Not my fault

Reminder: these are things that baristas can’t change – even when customers expect them to.

  • The company’s rules
  • The prices of the coffee specialities
  • Credit card not working
  • Expired loyalty cards and vouchers
  • Customers’ moods below freezing

A little respect for those latte masterpieces, please

‘I had made a little work of art in the milk foam of a critical customer to cheer her up, and she angrily stirred it all together with her stirrer: I DIDN’T want a stupid drawing.’

And what does it cost? Not much

Special offer this week: it costs exactly zero euros to be nice to the people making your coffee.

I’m not (yet) deaf

‘Some people shout their order as if they’re speaking in capital letters. There’s nothing wrong with my hearing, but if I work here for a while, that might change.’

L’Amourrrr

Don’t. Wink. Just don’t. It’s creepy.

Closing time is a thing, you know

When the floor is being mopped, the display cases are being tidied and a bin is placed in front of the entrance to stop new customers coming in, it’s a good time for you to leave – even if you’re still enjoying your chat and your latte macchiato. Sorry, but those employees would also like to go home when their shift is over.

‘Can I have a signature hot chocolate?’

Sure, what size?

‘With extra whipped cream’

Coming right up. What size?

‘And caramel sauce, please.’

What size?

‘Can I pay by card?’

Hurry, hurry, hurry

Just a quick memo: don’t shout, swear, stress out or be difficult with baristas because you’re late. YOU are late, THEY are doing their best, and if you really don’t have time to get coffee before your train leaves, maybe… don’t get coffee?

Why not cocaine?

When ordering a caramel macchiato with 7 (!!!) shots of espresso in it, the barista wonders: have you never heard of cocaine?

Monopoly money in the tip jar

Really?
