Coffee first, then breakfast? You’ll regret it!

Coffee first thing in the morning, then the rest? That can have unpleasant consequences. Research from the University of Bath shows that a strong cup of comfort after a broken night’s sleep causes your body to process glucose less effectively, leading to a disrupted metabolism.

The researchers subjected 29 healthy participants to three test nights: on one night, they were allowed to sleep for eight hours as usual, with a sugary drink for breakfast; on another occasion, the researchers regularly woke them up, with the same sugary drink for breakfast; and in the third experiment, after a poor night’s sleep, they were given a cup of coffee first, followed by a sugary drink.

Guinea pigs

Each morning, the researchers examined how the bodies of the guinea pigs processed all the sugar from the sweet breakfast. When the test subjects started the day with coffee, their bodies broke down glucose less effectively. Interesting results, according to the researchers. ‘Coffee therefore affects our metabolism and glucose breakdown. We don’t always realise that. Especially when you’ve slept badly, you really want to drink a cup of coffee,’ says lead researcher Harry Smith.

Coffee first, then breakfast? Nope..

The solution: drink your coffee after breakfast; then it no longer affects your metabolism. The researchers have not yet finished their investigation into coffee, sleep and metabolism. ‘We also want to know how much you need to disrupt your sleep to affect your system, what the long-term consequences are and how sport and exercise might influence these harmful effects.’ The impact of decaffeinated coffee or tea with breakfast has not yet been studied either.
