Can I see your teeth? Will you chew my food? Can you take my vodka to the restroom? Seriously, these are the questions people ask serving staff. And how do you respond?

Insane requests made to restaurant staff

Can I see your teeth?

‘An elderly man asked me to smile so he could look at my teeth. He said I had nice teeth and that he could tell I took good care of them. He was sitting at a table with his adult son, who apologized for his father. He said his father had been a dentist, but now sometimes said strange things because of Alzheimer’s.’

Will you pinch my boyfriend’s butt?

I’m a food delivery driver. On Valentine’s Day, a girl ordered a pizza for her boyfriend and asked if I would give him a hug and pinch his butt. When I delivered the pizza, I told him what she had asked, and we agreed that we would let her know I had carried out her request.’

Can I buy your socks?

‘A waitress at our restaurant came over to ask if she could sell her socks to four men who were dining with us. Three of the men were teasing number four: it was his birthday and he had a sock fetish. They offered her fifty dollars for her socks. I said: ask for a hundred dollars and tell them they also have to tip generously. So she did, and sure enough.’

Can I have the crab pasta for the price of the pasta carbonara?

Guest: ‘Can I have the pasta carbonara, but could I have lasagna instead of tagliatelle? And instead of the carbonara sauce, could I have the crab and lobster sauce?’
Me: ‘So you’d rather order the lasagna with crab and lobster?’
Guest: ‘No, I want pasta carbonara, just a little different. And don’t put anything extra on the bill, okay! I know the owner; if you do, I’ll make sure you get fired.’
Me: ‘Mom? Do you know this man?’

Can I have peanut butter ice cream with pickles?

‘I worked at Dairy Queen (an ice-cream shop, ed.) and a pregnant woman asked for ice cream with peanut butter and pickles. She even had her own pickles with her. We’re not actually allowed to put ingredients in the ice cream that aren’t from Dairy Queen itself, but guests are always allowed to add their own ingredients on top. So yes, she got peanut butter ice cream with pickles on it.’

Can I have the beef ravioli, but vegetarian?

‘I’ll never forget when we got a plate of our beef-filled ravioli sent back to the kitchen. It was almost gone, but the guest had a complaint. She was vegetarian, you see, and now she wanted something else.’

Can I have the vanilla latte without coffee?

‘I work in a hip coffee shop. Two teenage girls ordered an “iced vanilla latte,” but without coffee. So I asked: do you mean you want milk with vanilla syrup in it? Oh, one of them said, is that what a latte is? Then just give me a glass of water. And the other girl said admiringly: it really sounded like you knew what you were ordering!’

Can I have olives stuffed with blue cheese in my martini?

‘I was used to strange orders; I worked at a cocktail bar for quite a while. But this one was especially odd: a woman wanted olives stuffed with blue cheese in her martini. We didn’t have any blue-cheese-stuffed olives, so I had to fill each olive myself with a little blue cheese. She didn’t tip, by the way.’

Will you stir my cocktail with your finger?

‘The strangest guest was a woman who came into our cocktail bar during her lunch break. Her order: a lemon drop martini, which was listed at 12 dollars. You got an extra 5 dollars if you were willing to stir the martini with your fingers before she drank it. Definitely some kind of weird sex thing.’

Can you take my drink to the restroom?

‘A double vodka, in exactly ten minutes in the men’s restroom, please. That way his family wouldn’t find out. The guest would leave 20 dollars for me by the sink. He was about eighty.’

Could you clean my shoe for me?

‘At an event for food bloggers, one of our guests stepped into a bite of food that had fallen on the floor. She went over to a bar stool, stuck her foot more or less in my face and demanded that I clean the sole of her shoe. So I did, but when I later told my manager what had happened, he said she was welcome to get lost. Fantastic manager.’

Could you chew the food for me first?

‘The dish itself wasn’t that strange, but the request that came with it was: could I chew it and then spit it back onto the plate? Huh, what? The guest got very angry when I refused.’
