13x weird food combinations you used to eat

spaghetti op brood

Recently, I wrote about special food combinations from the past, and you responded with lots of recognition. But also with many new combinations, a few of which certainly raised some eyebrows. The kind of combinations that make you think: how on earth did you come up with that?!

So yes, it was high time for another list. Because the things you used to put on bread, but also the combinations you made with meat and fish… Sometimes a food combination can evoke a wonderful feeling of nostalgia, but be honest: some of these things sound pretty unusual, right?

The weird things you used to do with food

This is what you used to put on bread

1. ‘Delicious: fried Spam on bread!’
2. ‘What we used to do at home: leftover mashed potatoes and vegetables on bread, but warm.’
3. ‘Bread with fried potatoes; when the wallet was almost empty.’
4. ‘Reheated spaghetti, bami or nasi on bread — with curry.’
5. ‘Pickles on white bread with salad dressing. Delicious!’
6. ‘Bread with bacon fat and sugar.’

This is what you used to do with vegetables

1. ‘Fried onions and tomatoes. Then stir an egg through it to bind everything together. Season with whatever you like. Also delicious on bread!’
2. ‘Processed cheese with raw onion.’

This is what you used to do with fish

1. ‘A tin of herring in tomato sauce, then drain off three-quarters of the sauce. Add a generous dollop of mayo or fries sauce, stir… For example, on bread for lunch.’
2. ‘Stockfish with potatoes, rice and a buttery sauce: delicious, but it is very expensive fish nowadays.’

This is what you used to do with meat

1. ‘Spam mixed through macaroni; a taste of holidays in the old days.’
2. ‘A cracker with processed cheese and spreadable liver sausage.’

Honourable mention

I thought this was such a special combination that it deserves a category of its own… How on earth did you come up with this?

1. ‘Spaghetti Bolognese with satay sauce!’
