An evening out for dinner should be relaxing. Laid-back. No stress, no hassle and above all, no gross things. Rats running through the restaurant, for example, or unpleasant guests who briefly forget that they’re in a public space. But unfortunately, in life you don’t always get lucky. These are 15 stories from people who experienced truly disgusting things in a restaurant. We can only hope they didn’t suffer lifelong trauma from these bizarre scenes.

15 Gross Restaurant Experiences
”A woman changing her baby’s diaper on one of the tables. Before you start hating me: there were changing tables in both bathrooms.”
”When I worked in a restaurant, I moved the slushie machine aside because I smelled something strange. The smell was coming from black mold. I quit on the spot and immediately reported the restaurant to the health authorities.”
”My boss – I worked in a restaurant – was snacking from the garnish tray for the bartenders. She was nibbling on the lemon wedges and sugar sticks meant for drinks. She put her fingers in her mouth and then reached back in for another cherry or orange wedge, while my colleague and I watched. I looked at her and said: “What you’re doing is absolutely disgusting; those go in people’s drinks and you’re sticking your filthy fingers in there?!” She was shocked and walked away. The bartender came over and thanked me for saying something, explaining that the staff had been telling her this all the time, but she didn’t listen because she was the owner.”
”My boyfriend ordered a hamburger. He took two bites and then tasted something strange. It was a bandage. A used bandage.”
”Once I found a dead cockroach in a salt shaker. Or rather, my grandmother found it. I worked at the restaurant, and she and my grandfather came to have lunch with us. Needless to say, they never came back after that.”
”I was having lunch with a friend and thought I had stepped on her foot, so I pressed down a little harder, just to tease her. But she didn’t react. Then a woman at the table next to us screamed that a rat was wriggling under my shoe.”
”I used to work in an Italian restaurant where there was a used tampon at the back of the kitchen. Naturally, nobody wanted to touch it, so it stayed there the entire time I worked there. They never cleaned the back of the kitchen…”
”We had a man in my aunt’s café who emptied his colostomy bag in the middle of the café instead of in the restroom. We asked him not to come back ever again.”
”A group of 10 came to our restaurant. There are white tablecloths on all the tables. When the group left, we saw that one of the women had wiped her baby’s dirty bottom on the tablecloth.”
”Cutting raw and cooked chicken at the same time on the same cutting board. The kitchen is open, and from the dining area you can see what’s happening. Everything is prepackaged; they have nothing fresh. I haven’t eaten there since.”
”I saw a child take a spoonful of cookie dough, eat it and then put the spoon back in the container. This was at one of those places where you can decorate your own frozen yogurt with 100 different toppings.”
”Worms in a fish. The worst part was that this happened at my father’s restaurant. The man responsible for grilling the fish had only worked there for a month, and he cooked fish that was too old and had been poorly refrigerated… He saw the worms and still cooked them. You can imagine that he was fired immediately.”
”A steakhouse where I was a waiter had tall tray stands that could hold multiple trays of food. These happened to be all steaks. As a kitchen employee rolled them from the refrigerator to the grilling area, it tipped over and all the steaks fell onto the floor. The employee picked the steaks up off the floor and then put them back on the tray, before cooking them. She looked at me and said: ‘The grill kills everything that’s on it anyway.”
”One time, an entire family of cockroaches fell from the ceiling straight onto my plate of food.”

”I’m friends with a health inspector. He told me that he once saw a mummified mouse hanging from a suspended ceiling in the kitchen. He immediately closed the kitchen and made everyone stop working until the area was clean and tidy again.”
