Cockroaches, bedbugs, disgusting bathroom – these hotel rooms are horrifying

Cockroaches have taken over the minibar, bedbugs are dancing the samba on the bedspread and there’s a knife under the mattress. Just check out the reviews on Tripadvisor and Booking.com, because they really do exist: appalling rooms in Hotel California, where you’d rather check out as quickly as possible – if that’s even possible.

Natasha Connor didn’t get lucky with her surprise weekend in a London hotel. She decided to take photos of the filth in the room to support her complaint. Dirty toilet, bathroom not cleaned, and when she lifted the mattress she got the shock of her life: several knives were hidden underneath. ‘We knew it was a budget hotel, but this is ridiculous,’ she responded on Facebook. ‘We wanted our money back, but instead the hotel offered us an extra free night. Never!’
- Heel slim. En heel gruwelijk als je het vindt.
Poop all the way to the ceiling
Four years ago, the Consumers’ Association conducted a spot check: just how clean are hotel rooms, really? Of the thirty rooms examined, eighteen weren’t clean enough to sleep in, and four were downright filthy. Dirty stains, hair everywhere and E. coli bacteria – yes, those are fecal bacteria – all the way up to the ceiling; the researchers were shocked by the results. The bathrooms in particular were far from clean in most cases. ‘The shower floor is often especially dirty,’ was the conclusion.
And then there’s that UV lamp…
The men behind Another Dirty Room take it seriously. They find hotels and motels on TripAdvisor with ratings far below freezing and then film everything that’s growing and thriving in those hotel rooms. ‘I’d rather spend a night in the Bateman Hotel,’ they say, for example, about the Best Budget Inn, where the cockroaches run out of the minibar and the bedbugs leap out of their way. And when they turn on the UV lamp? Brrrr….
Hide a note
What should you do if you end up in a hellhole like that? Take photos, lawyers advise, so you can prove your complaint later. Then discuss it with management. Discuss it – don’t scream hysterically, even though your room may well give you reason to. Did something go wrong with the cleaning? Then a second chance is the solution. Or another room. If you’ve completely lost confidence in the place, just leave – and put a note between the sheets to warn the next guests.
