15x packaging so misleading it’s almost criminal

Toblerone misleidend

Food is unaffordable these days. So it’s nice when we can get a little value for our money. When we buy something tasty, we want it to actually be what we expect. But unfortunately, it happens a little too often that we also get seriously ripped off by misleading packaging. In 2024, Albert Heijn sold the most misleading food product of the year. Sometimes the packaging promises us the jackpot and we get a miserable consolation prize.

We all remember the Mickey Mouse ice creams that turned out to be nightmare-inducing monstrosities, right? Well, there’s another kind of deception that gives us chills. Out of anger, that is. We’re talking about packaging that looks absolutely packed, but mostly consists of air. Nasty. Shrinkflation?

Shrinkflation?

Are you wondering whether that’s the same as shrinkflation? No, not really. Shrinkflation involves a hidden price increase. The weight or size of a product gets smaller, while the price stays the same. For example, you used to pay €2.99 for a 750-milliliter bottle of squash, and now you get a 500-milliliter bottle for the same price. We obviously don’t like that either. But in the cases below, it’s genuinely a case of extremely blatant deception. Laughable, extremely sad, or simply a case of the producer packaging things cleverly? Or all of the above?
