Of course, all kinds of things are thrown into hot oil all over the world, but nowhere in the world are as many different deep-fried snacks sold as in our snack bars. How many of these on the list do you know?

Until the mid-1990s, the kroket was the number-one deep-fried snack. The meat kroket is still hugely popular, but variations with chicken, fish and vegetables are also on the rise. In the 1990s, the frikandel overtook the kroket as the most popular snack in the Netherlands.

Frikandel platter

The frikandel speciaal is still the most frequently ordered variety, but there are now more creations, with, for example, Eastern, Greek or Italian toppings. At Happy Frites in Ransdaal, nothing is too crazy: you can even order a proper frikandel platter yourself.

Viandel or sitostick

Just as kroketten and frikandellen will never disappear from snack bars, there are also so-called ‘specialty snacks’ that have stood the test of time and now have a permanent place on the snack menu. In the mood for a snack adventure? Try one of the snacks below:

  • Bocado: triangular crispy snack with Mexican-seasoned cubes of chicken and vegetables
  • Bonita: breaded rectangular snack with a creamy vegetable filling
  • Krokidel: seasoned sausage in a crispy pastry casing, similar to a Viandel
  • Lucifer: comparable to a kipcorn, with a cornflake crust and a spicy red tip
  • Ragoezi: triangular, spicy chicken-and-ham snack with a panko-like crust
  • Ribster: substantial meat snack with the flavour of sweet barbecue ribs
  • Roti Roll: Surinamese roll filled with chicken, yardlong beans, potatoes and spicy masala spices
  • Satérol: crispy crêpe filled with tender chicken in peanut sauce
