Typically Utrecht: Marjolein pizza – with two croquettes

A famous snack in Utrecht: Turkish pizza with two croquettes. Invented by student Marjolein, and ever since a permanent fixture on the menu at Cafetaria Ten Beste. According to our very own Snackspert, ‘a golden combination.’

Just as some fantastic adventures begin with beer, lots of beer, this snack also came into existence that way. Student Marjolein ordered it for the first time during student orientation in 2015. The pizza, which is naturally called Pizza Marjolein, has been on the cafeteria’s menu for years, but outside Utrecht this combination of calories and even more calories isn’t really well known.
Just replace it
The cafeteria on Predikherenstraat gives guests the option of replacing the spicy minced meat on the Turkish pizza with something else from the snack display, and that’s how Pizza Marjolein was born: with lettuce, garlic sauce and two croquettes. Luckily, our Snackspert had already tried it in 2016. With great pleasure, if we’re to believe his review. ‘There is a world before, and a world after Pizza Marjolein,’ he writes. ‘It’s a golden combination. The croquettes are softened by the pizza, and with every bite you think of that one time you went down the slide blissfully happy, because the meat and its accompanying ingredients slide so smoothly down your throat.’
A keeper
The flexible setup of the Utrecht cafeteria also led to Pizza Simon, Turkish pizza with two cheese soufflés, Pizza Laurens with a kipcorn, and Dürüm Jeroen, with a frikandel, but Pizza Marjolein in particular is a keeper: recently, it can also be ordered through Thuisafgehaald. In Utrecht only, unfortunately…
