You’ll Want to Try This: The New Snack Trend Is Called Winky
Alongside the classics in the refrigerated display, such as the kroket, frikandel and kaassoufflé, new supersnacks are regularly discovered. The new star in the snack firmament: Winky. According to people who have already tried it, an unforgettable marriage between the bamischijf and the kroket.
The Winky comes from the creative kitchen of Wim Wink from Sint Willebrord. Together with his wife Anja, he ran a cafeteria in the village and another one in a neighboring village for years, but he has handed those businesses over to successors. Wim can still regularly be found near the fryer, though, as he helps out with daily tasks in the two snack bars. And his creativity is far from retired, as demonstrated by the invention of the Winky.
Winky Is Set to Conquer the Netherlands
Wim is the brains behind the Winkys, which are made by a snack factory in Goirle. Why not combine the ragout of a kroket with the herbs and filling of a bamischijf, Wim suggested to his snack supplier. An instant hit: every day, an entire box is sold at cafeteria Liana in Sint Willebrord. ‘28 pieces,’ says Wim proudly. By now, the Winky is on the menu at ten cafeterias in the area. For now, it is primarily a Brabant delicacy, but according to the producer, the bami-kroket combination certainly has the potential to conquer the whole of the Netherlands.
‘Tasty Thing’
And the taste? As far as the Winky’s spiritual father can judge objectively, Wim calls it ‘simply a tasty thing’. He calls the Winky his legacy. ‘That way, my name will live on when I’m no longer here.’
