This piano is made of… sausages?

Did you spend endless hours practising the recorder when you were younger? Take guitar lessons until your fingers bled? Get told off by your piano teacher because you hadn’t practised yet again? German Patrick turns music lessons as an obligatory chore into a delightful experience, with his piano made of sausages.

Yes, you read that right. Patrick from the infamous Patricks World, a website he fills with projects to waste time on, made a kind of synthesiser using ten bockwursts and a whole lot of plugs. Can you play preludes on it, or Eine Kleine Nachtmusik? No, but a rendition of Modern Talking should be possible.

But how does it work? Electrical engineer Guus Kamminga explains. ‘Basically, it uses the same principle as old touchscreens. Touching it changes the resistance, which results in a measurable change in current. Convert that change into a Boolean, link it to a little sound clip and presto, a sausage piano.’ Um, right.

German beer and sausages

The sausage piano isn’t Patrick’s first musical project. Earlier, he built a sound machine using beer cans. Also more suitable for modern dance music than operetta or, well, light opera. A combination of the sausage and beer machines would obviously be ideal. Now all we need is a festival like Lowlands or Down the Rabbit Hole that wants a German to make music with beer and sausages on an alternative stage.
