17 of the finest terraces in the Netherlands

Enjoy drinks in the spring sunshine and spend hours savoring good beers. From The Hague to Den Bosch, these are the terraces you should visit.

The Hague
For endless choice, head to Grote Markt in The Hague. At Rootz, just around the corner from Grote Markt, you can choose from 240 Belgian or Dutch beers. Martes has a small, charming terrace on a bridge, with a lovely view of the water. This is also the place to come for sweet treats such as pear and white chocolate cake and peach and apricot pie. Capriole Café and Mama Kelly are also great, both with terraces by the water. Capriole has its own coffee roastery, and the espresso gin and tonic with lime is highly recommended. At Mama Kelly, you can moor with your own boat and then enjoy delicious fish dishes such as gratinated lobster or an oyster tasting.

Amsterdam
Bij Thijssen in the Jordaan is where you come for drinks in the afternoon and then never leave. With all the consequences that entails. De Waterkant is a place for convivial parties and celebrations, and Hannekes Boom, near Amsterdam Central Station, is also a great place to relax. Prefer to head up high? Then you’ll feel right at home at Floor17 in Amsterdam-West. And at Proost & Stroop, the whole family can settle in for a pancake and a glass of wine.

Utrecht
Ledig Erf is my favorite terrace in Utrecht. It’s not as busy as Neude, but lively and full of sunshine. Here you’ll find De Poort, where you can enjoy drinks and play a game together. At the Louis Hartloper Complex, you can watch arthouse films, but also relax for a long time on the sunny terrace. Outside the city center, you’ll find Strand Oog in Al, with beautiful views across the water and of the bridge. The hidden courtyard garden of Klein Berlijn is also a must visit.

Den Bosch
When a café attracts lots of locals, you know you’re in the right place. For an extensive beer menu and friendly bartenders, head to Café De Palm. At café BUURT, you can go for any meal of the day. Moor your boat nearby and take your time over an extensive round of drinks. A little outside the city center, you’ll find theehuis Bloem, where you can enjoy the sunshine in the garden’s comfortable loungers. Located next to Brabant’s second-oldest water tower, Café Herman is a special, historic place to enjoy the sun and delicious food, such as dim sum and poke bowls.
