6x extended lunches in Amsterdam

Amsterdam has no shortage of great lunch spots. You can get eggs Benedict or a club sandwich everywhere, but what if you want to sit down for a more elaborate lunch? These restaurants are just the ticket.

Toscanini
At Amsterdam’s best Italian restaurant, you can now enjoy not only cena but also pranzo. The lunch menu is a smaller version of the evening menu, and every day there is a changing three- or four-course menu for €29,- or €35,-. À la carte, you might order the ravioli of the day, saffron pasta or the fish or meat of the day.
Toscanini is one of the city’s most notorious spots when it comes to scoring a reservation. With extra tables available for lunch every day, your chances of getting a table suddenly shoot up. Yes!

The Lobby
At The Lobby, you can also go for standard lunch classics such as eggs Benedict, shrimp croquettes and their unrivalled blueberry pancakes, but you can also go all out. Start with some oysters and, for your main course, go for beef cheek with rendang gravy, for example. Yes, rendang gravy. Mmmm. They also have a wine list that commands respect. Cheers!

RIJKS®
Want to really go all out? Then simply reserve a table at Joris Bijdendijk’s Michelin-starred restaurant RIJKS®. At lunch, there is a changing three-course menu for €42,- or €52,-, or you can order à la carte. How about glazed sweetbreads with ginger cake and grapefruit, or scallop ceviche with corn and pumpkin?

Merkelbach
Here too, you can order a special lunch menu (priced at €32,-) consisting of three courses. Nice, but I especially recommend the fish soup here. It’s incredible, especially paired with a glass of rosé from Bandol. You can’t go wrong.
Middenweg 72
De Plantage
You can also come here for a simple ham-and-cheese toastie or a salt beef sandwich with sauerkraut, but the menu also features more elaborate lunch dishes. Choose one of their three types of shakshuka, yellow lentil soup, ravioli or simply a thick entrecôte with marrow. Whatever you’re in the mood for, you’ll find something to satisfy you here.

Café Restaurant Amsterdam
Another great one in the ‘something for everyone’ category. At Café Restaurant Amsterdam (known locally as Cradam), you can make it as elaborate as you like. Go for a simple baguette with cheese, filet américain or chocolate sprinkles (yes, really), or choose a croque. During lunch, everything from the evening menu is also available, so if you fancy a plate of steak frites or mushroom risotto, this is the place for you too.
