24 hours in Breda: these are the culinary hotspots you need to visit

Breda-Shutterstock

Breda is also known as the Pearl of the South. By the locals themselves, it has to be said. Still, after visiting the city, you’ll understand where that nickname comes from. This is where you experience the Burgundian lifestyle at its best. That is also (or mainly, really) thanks to the many culinary gems the city has to offer. Cosy brown cafés, intimate coffee bars and chic fine dining spots—you’ll find them all in Breda.

Planning a day trip to Breda soon? We all know that your day is only a success if you’ve eaten and drunk well. Save yourself a lot of research or endless wandering around the city looking for a nice place. These are the culinary spots you need to visit in Breda. From breakfast to wake you up to a late night snack to round off the day.

Breakfast

T-Huis

When you leave the station, you walk straight into Valkenberg Park. There you’ll find T-Huis on your left. One of Breda’s most popular hotspots. It’s especially lovely here when the sun is shining, with a view over the entire park. You can order American pancakes with pancetta and maple syrup, for example, or a granola bowl. Don’t be alarmed by the chickens cheerfully waddling between the tables.

Kamu

At Kamu on Boschstraat, you eat in an industrial/vintage-style building surrounded by bicycles. What can you eat here? Gingerbread crumble, for example. Or the famous sourdough bread with ricotta and strawberry-ginger jam. You drink coffee from their own roastery: White Label Coffee. Feel free to take a stroll along Boschstraat after breakfast. This is one of the cosiest streets in Breda.

Brandpunt

Concept store Brandpunt is a creative spot in the heart of the city centre, overlooking the Grote Kerk. Here you can enjoy a delicious smoothie bowl—the Framboost with raspberries, banana and coconut milk is fantastic—or classic oatmeal, but with a tasty twist. After breakfast, have a browse among the lovely, almost always handmade items by Breda designers.

Coffee

Sip First

You drink truly excellent coffee at Sip First, on the cosy Sint Janstraat. This is a specialty coffee bar of the highest level. A place with super-friendly service. Try a hand-brewed filter coffee and you’ll suddenly understand where the term black gold comes from.

Chatwick

Chatwick is the only coffee bar in Breda with its own roastery inside the establishment. They roast their beans here while you enjoy a good cup of coffee. They also have a baker on staff who makes the most delicious pastries. I think the one with pistachio filling is heavenly.

Lunch

PuiCk

PuiCk is a place with a wonderfully nostalgic feel. With Chesterfield sofas, 1960s chairs and vintage lamps. The lunch menu features colourful dishes from all corners of the world. Tip: the Parade PuiCk: 5 small dishes from the menu, tailored to the season.

Sunshine

The most cheerful lunch café in Breda. It’s a party just to be inside. The interior is a mix of items from all over the world. Tropical plants, bright yellow chairs and Chinese lamps. Yet it all works. The same goes for the menu. This is truly worldly food. From an Indonesian Gado Gado sandwich to a Japanese salad.

In Kannen en Kruiken

Many people from Breda, with or without a garden, go to In Kannen en Kruiken. The reason: they have the finest city garden in Breda. It’s also a great place to spend time indoors. Artistic outbursts and Fleetwood Mac LPs adorn the walls. My favourite dish on the menu: the Kimchi Kimchi Kimchi A Man After Midnight. Not just because I’m an ABBA fan—this kimchi grilled cheese with chipotle mayo is simply delicious.

Drinks

DOK 19

DOK 19 by the harbour is the place where Breda’s hip crowd gathers for drinks all year round. In summer, it’s a struggle to find a spot here. The menu features plenty of craft beers. Prefer wine? Then head next door to DOK 18. DOK19’s sister venue, but for wine lovers.

De Beyerd

Every Breda local who enjoys drinks has been to De Beyerd at some point in their life. The ultimate brown café. It has its own brewery, Drie Hoefijzers. You’ll find it at the back of the establishment. Be sure to order a beer there.

Dinner

Streetfood Club

This is a true gem in Breda. Hidden between Bagels & Beans and Van Ham on Van Coothplein. It used to be a huge bookshop, and even earlier an old cinema. Now it is Breda’s street food club. Inside, it’s a true paradise for your Instagram feed. The menu features worldly dishes to share. Empanadas, dim sums, oysters… You should also order a cocktail. The cocktail menu is huge. In the evening, the chairs are pushed aside and the DJ spins records. Yes, this is a place where you’ll stay longer than you initially thought.

Jongens van Zand en Klei

Crazy about potatoes? Then you need to visit Jongens van Zand en Klei. Here, the golden tuber takes centre stage. The owners’ aim: to dress up the ordinary spud in a sexy outfit. Well, you get the idea. The menu’s bestseller is the Crunchy Potato Basket. You choose it with your favourite filling. Rendang, for example, or duck leg or hete bliksem. Indeed, the potato is actually quite sexy.

Fransjepan

A new fine dining concept on Boschstraat. A fine dining bistro that exudes the atmosphere of an old gentlemen’s club. Young, immensely talented chef Frans van Leeuwerden is at the helm here. Enjoy a 3- to 8-course dinner, with a matching wine pairing. Highly recommended if you want to eat at the highest level in Breda.

Snacks

Breda has 2 world-famous chip shops (yes, chips, not fries): Christ and De Toren. Christ is located by Van Coothplein. You absolutely have to order the chicken nuggets here. They make them entirely themselves. Ordering by phone is convenient, as there is a queue every day. De Toren is in the city centre, towards the cafés and clubs. This place is so popular that it even inspired a carnival hit (Friet van De Toren). Here you order gourmet fries. Think rendang fries or currywurst fries. This is what we call fighting your hangover in a culinary way.
