5 Absurdly Handy Kitchen Hacks, Part 3

Food and kitchen hacks; we can’t get enough of them. Those little tricks that other people consider perfectly normal, but that leave you completely stunned – sometimes simply because they’re so simple! So, below are a few more incredibly handy tips & tricks that we’re more than happy to share:

Whether it’s peeling an orange or shaking exactly one Tic Tac out of the box; life is a whole lot easier once you’ve mastered these:
Kitchen hack 1: roll out the orange
Cutting off the top and bottom, I knew that much. Then making a few vertical cuts, peeling off the skin and prying the segments apart. I thought that was pretty handy, until I saw this! Start the same way (remove the caps from the top and bottom), then make just one cut and roll it out! A-ma-zing.

Kitchen hack 2: cleaning a blender
If you’ve only blended a juice, you can get away with a quick rinse, as long as you hold the jug under the tap immediately after emptying it and don’t let everything dry out. But after blending a better smoothie, for example one with a big dollop of peanut butter mixed in, you often end up with a jug that’s more difficult to clean. Add to that the fact that you don’t like getting your fingers anywhere near those blades, and often all you do is move a dish brush back and forth a little, splashing water over the edge of the sink. Not anymore! Simply add a little warm water and a drop of dish soap to the blender and switch it on briefly again. Make sure the lid is on securely!

Kitchen hack 3: turn your drink carton around
Many people know this, but for some it’s a real eye-opener: those drink cartons with the spout on top? You should hold them with the spout ‘on top’, rather than with the spout close to the rim of the glass. It may feel counterintuitive; after all, you want to stay as close as possible when pouring. But have you noticed that this always makes the liquid glug, often spilling over the rim of the glass? By keeping the spout at the top, the movement of air in the carton ensures that the stream of liquid comes out more smoothly. Less mess with your juice or (plant-based) milk from now on!

Kitchen hack 4: the Tic Tac trick
Whaaaat? We couldn’t believe our eyes… On the inside of the lid of a Tic Tac box, there’s a kind of holder. If you briefly hold the box upside down, then place it on its side and open it, there’s exactly one Tic Tac waiting there!

Shopping hack 5: bags on your trolley
The design of shopping carts was probably thought through more carefully than you and I realize. On the side of a cart are little loops that I’ve definitely seen before, but never considered useful attachments. But they absolutely do have a purpose! You can hang all kinds of bags from them. And just think: this can easily be done with reusable, sustainable bags too, instead of all the new plastic you can see in this photo…
