5 life stages you recognize if you ever drink shots

We’ve all been there… shots of Flügel, a Boswandeling or Splitje… do you still remember the headache? Funny enough, we’re all growing more and more mature, yes, even when it comes to taking shots. And don’t lie, you can probably divide your life stages into those little sneaky glasses too. Just check out these five. Cheers.

5 life stages you recognize if you ever drink shots

1. The shots for when you’re still underage

Yes, let’s not all pretend we were such saints and didn’t drink before we turned sixteen (or eighteen). That’s obviously not entirely true, right: for me, this period consisted of drinking Canei and Piña Colada. And not the cocktail, no, just ready-made from the bottle. Disgusting. So I didn’t actually drink many shots myself during this period, but this was the period when the Jägerbomb entered my life. A memorable moment. Ever since then, a skiing holiday has hardly felt complete without one. And for some reason, this was also the phase when I became acquainted with Goldstrike. Does that drink even still exist?

2. The shots for the beginner drinker

The sickly sweet shots. Appeltaart, Splitje and, of course, Flügel. Bonus points if you always added a dollop of whipped cream to the Appeltaart. The Stuiterbal also often makes an appearance, a ridiculously disgusting combination of Sambuca and Blue Curaçao. At my local pub, the Koetje was always served as the standard shot. I still occasionally have nightmares about that taste. The absolute favourite during this period was the B52, also known as every bartender’s nightmare, because it takes so long to get those layers just right. But oh man, secretly it really is delicious. Maybe I should make that B52 come back more than a decade after this phase.

3. The shots for the binge-drinking student

For many, student life is naturally a period of drinking a lot, having little money (or borrowing more from DUO), plenty of rough mornings and a little studying here and there. It was no different for me. And when it comes to the financial side of things, you cut back on the shots too: hello, ten shots for ten euros. Bargain, right? Before you know it, you’re standing at the (sports) bar with filthy test tubes filled with Jäger (for people from Amsterdam: yes, the one near Leidseplein is of course notorious for these shots). This was also the period when you left the mixers behind and were ready for the real deal. Tequila, Sambuca, Dropshot, my all-time favourite Frangelico… No shaking, just whoosh: booze straight into that little glass. If you wanted to make a grand finale after two in the morning, the Flatliner was of course the way to go. Or the Tequila Suicide, which you loved using to steal the show — although with that name, you really should have known better…

4. The shots for people who look forward to the weekend

When you have a full-time job and sit in the office from nine to five, nothing is nicer than that Friday afternoon drinks. And yes, I obviously don’t need to tell you that things can get out of hand. The biggest danger here is, of course, the liquid dinner. What characterizes the shots at Friday afternoon drinks is that they show up early in the evening. You start early, barely eat, so you’re already in the mood for shots sooner. And that’s how you end up toasting with your colleagues over a Jäger at around nine or ten. Wonderful. Limoncello is also often present here. Preferably chilled, of course, but if it isn’t, we won’t make too much of it.

5. The shots for people who actually don’t want to do shots anymore

At the beginning of your drinking career, shots are always a party. Hangovers were still manageable and you could go out every day of the week. Well, things are a little different now. So when someone orders a round of shots now, it’s no longer automatically greeted with a ‘yay’, but with sighs. And you become pickier, right? I now consistently turn down any Sambuca (‘no, I really don’t drink that’), secretly empty tequila under the bar and hold my nose when it comes to a Dropshot or Salmari. We’re getting old, aren’t we?
