5x Seriously Bizarre Australian Dishes and Food Items

Every country has its own eating habits that can leave people from other countries astonished. Licorice or pickled herring with onions can make many a foreigner gag, and vice versa, it’s often just as funny to find out what people across the border enjoy eating while you might think, ‘Gaaaaah!’…

Look, we think some dishes even cause a stir among the local population. We actually can’t imagine that every French person likes andouillette, or every German likes blood soup. But sometimes it’s the more ‘ordinary’ dishes from a country that cause worldwide consternation, such as these Australian food items (and we’re even leaving Vegemite, the Australian version of Marmite, out of the equation!):

Pie Floater

The not-so-cryptic name Pie Floater describes this national treasure rather accurately: it’s a pie that floats. In what? Pea soup. Okaaaaaay… You can tell that whoever came up with this didn’t mind making a mess at the table. How do you eat it? With a spoon? With a spoon and a knife? Incidentally, a Pie Floater isn’t really complete unless it’s also covered in ketchup or tomato sauce. I find this dish rather confusing. But you do you, Australia!

Mu Roo Burger

Twitter user William Wire sums it up nicely: Crocodile Dundee was a LIE. The Mu Roo burger that this café proudly lists as a speciality is made from: emu and kangaroo mince. [Gulp…]

The Jaffle

Absolutely crazy, but probably ideal hangover food. Or the perfect foundation for an Australian Beer Run! If you’re into carbs on carbs, your dream comes true here in the form of: a toasted sandwich filled with spaghetti. The one in the photo is also quite an impressive size.

A Very Special Ice Cream

The ice cream itself sounds delicious, we have to admit: toffee and vanilla ice cream in a layer of chocolate, dipped in crunchy pieces of honeycomb biscuit! Yum! It’s just that after sixty years, it might be time to move with the times and change the name, because what are these ice creams still called, even though they were invented in 1959? Gaytime. And yes, gay is also an old-fashioned Anglo-Saxon word for cheerful. But still, umm..?

Time for a new name, perhaps?

Nuggets with the Sauce of All Sauces

And the last one? We can totally get behind that! Because just as the film Pulp Fiction taught us that Americans think putting mayonnaise on your fries is crazy, this Twitter user is baffled that Australians eat mayo with chicken nuggets. And we think that’s a pretty perfect combo! Especially when you make your own chicken nuggets and add a squeeze of that incredibly delicious Japanese Kewpie Mayonnaise, which is fresh and umami at the same time. Australia, this we understand!
