Can I have a hamburger with… mandarins? And even more weird combinations

Some combinations are perfect: peanut butter and jam, for example. The peanut butter becomes a little sweeter, while the jam makes it less sticky—brilliant! But there are just as many combos that make absolutely no sense. These waiters and waitresses reveal the strangest combinations they have passed on to the kitchen.

What would you like on the bagel?

Chris worked in a bagel shop in New York, where one regular always ordered the same thing: ‘A chocolate bagel with cream cheese and salmon, with a glass of orange juice on the side. The first time, I asked if I had understood him correctly, and sure enough, that was exactly what he wanted.’ Chris once made this bagel for himself too, just to check whether it might accidentally be an outrageously delicious combination. ‘I had to gag—it was impossible. Sorry, but chocolate and salmon really don’t go together.’

Vitamins are important

A man ordered the restaurant’s signature hamburger from Mika. ‘But instead of fries or salad, he preferred to have segments of mandarin with it. We had them in stock for the children’s menu, but this was still a strange combination.’ He finished the whole thing, much to Mika and the kitchen crew’s surprise.

Fries over vegetables

Albert has noticed that Americans want fries with everything. ‘Beluga caviar, with fries please. Foie gras, or lobster, with a portion of fries.’ He expects they would even order fries with a baked potato. ‘Sometimes the chef has come up with a perfect combination, such as oysters with beautiful vegetables, and then our American guests still ask whether they can swap the vegetables for fries.’

Come again?

‘The French toast, with tuna salad.’ Disgusting, Erin thought, but she passed the order on to the kitchen anyway.

Hold the onion

Steve worked at various takeaway restaurants for years, so very little surprises him anymore. ‘Egg fried rice, but without the egg—that was a very strange order. But this is the strangest: an Indian curry without onion. How do you think that sauce is made? Exactly, with lots and lots of onions.’

Do you have sweeteners?

Frederick: ‘Strangest combination? Probably those gym types who order a gigantic steak, eat an entire platter of fries and then put sweeteners in their coffee instead of sugar.’
