7 hotspots in Canggu

Sun, sea, bowls and Instagram: Canggu in a (coconut) nutshell. We could be blasé about it, but admittedly: after the umpteenth nasi goreng, a photogenic smoothie bowl at one of Canggu’s ultra-hip hotspots is a fresh and welcome change. This is where you need to be.

The Lawn
Lounge sofas? Check. Infinity pool? Check. Live music? Check. This beach club has been thought out down to the last detail, yet nevertheless has a genuinely chilled vibe. And the food is pretty good too. Definitely try the rice paper rolls, Thai beef salad and char siu pork bao buns. Very international.
Shady Shack
Fit boys (and girls) and vegans, take note: this is your paradise. Green juices, jackfruit tacos and generously filled bowls: it would be strange if you didn’t manage to get your two hundred grams of vegetables a day here. And honestly, it’s delicious too.

Milk & Madu
Wood-fired pizza? How about lava-stone pizza? At Milk & Madu—which, incidentally, uses the golden Instagram formula of pink tiles & tropical plants—you can enjoy generously topped pizzas baked on, yes, a lava stone. Lunch here is pretty good too.

Canteen Cafe
The biggest argument for not eating at all those hip spots? They’re usually owned by foreign hospitality entrepreneurs, so you’re not supporting the local population. Canteen Café is different. This hip surf spot is actually locally owned, so you can enjoy the beautiful bowls, avocado toast and perfect cappuccinos here with a completely clear conscience.
Milu by Nook
In this rattan paradise with a dreamlike view over a rice field, they serve the most diverse dishes. From wiener schnitzel and bratwurst (yes, really) to smoothie bowls and red velvet cake. That’s usually not a good sign, but in this case you can take the gamble. Tip: the nasi campur, crunchy chicken salad and ocean reef smoothie bowl are their bestsellers, and for good reason.

La Brisa
Had your fill of The Lawn? Beach club La Brisa is at least as lovely. Take a dip in the pool, flop down on one of the beanbags, dream away while gazing out over the sea (that sunset!!) and order one of the delicious seafood dishes. Tip: the tuna tataki is excellent.
Mason
If you’ve had enough of Bintangs and don’t fancy an overly sweet cocktail, the slightly more upscale Mason is the place for you. Here they serve beautiful wines and good cocktails on an Italian-inspired terrace filled with olive trees and rosemary bushes. That’s right: olive trees in the middle of Bali. A holiday within your holiday. Another plus: the staff are incredibly friendly.
