7 kitchen hacks that make absolutely no sense

We love those handy tricks on TikTok, top tips on Instagram and articles full of dos and don’ts. Anything that can make our everyday meals easier, smarter and faster is welcome. But some of those kitchen hacks don’t work at all. These are the seven biggest fails. Oh dear, why did we ever fall for these?

Kitchen hack 1: ‘Golden eggs’, aka super scrambled eggs
It sounds fantastic, right: put a raw egg in a pair of tights and spin it around really fast so that the yolk and egg white mix inside the shell. If you boil it, you’ll have a sort of scrambled egg in the shell – a so-called golden egg. Fantastic, indeed, but… it doesn’t work.
Kitchen hack 2: turning a tortilla into a taco
You want Mexican food, with those delicious crispy tacos, but you only have soft tortillas in the pantry. No need to panic, because according to the smart people on the internet, you could solve this by rolling the tortilla into a cardboard cup and briefly heating it in the microwave. It was supposed to become a crispy taco. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work: chewy tortilla with soggy bits. Fail!
Kitchen hack 3: popcorn in all the colors of the rainbow
Can you melt a packet of Skittles over your (homemade!) popcorn to get popcorn in all the colors of the rainbow? Too good to be true, unfortunately: brown caramel with hard pieces, burnt popcorn and a nonstick pan ruined beyond repair. Sadly…
Kitchen hack 4: frying an egg on parchment paper
Don’t have a nonstick pan (for example, because you tried making popcorn with Skittles)? Then you can supposedly fry your egg in a regular pan with a piece of parchment paper in it. At least, that’s what they promise. But not everything you read on the internet is true, and this makes no sense either. The food editor at Eat This tried it: a tasteless egg (yes, you do need that butter after all), parchment paper that almost catches fire and, besides, what is it even needed for? You can fry an egg perfectly well in a pan without a nonstick coating, as long as the pan is hot enough.
Kitchen hack 5: a lemon you can spray everywhere
Simply stick a plant mister into a lemon and voilà, you can spray lemon juice over your food. Does it work? Of course not. There are special sprayers you can screw into a lemon, and those do seem to work, but still: the whole point of a kitchen hack is that it should work without effort or expensive equipment.
Kitchen hack 6: making jam in the microwave
With a little fruit and a little sugar, you can make just enough jam for two people very quickly in the microwave. Does it work? Probably, if you’ve managed to scrape all the exploded strawberries off the walls of the microwave. Unfortunately, fruit explodes quite quickly in the microwave, so this isn’t recommended either.
Kitchen hack 7: opening a bottle of wine with a screwdriver or knife
You’re in the mood for wine, the bottle is right in front of you and your glass is ready. But where’s the corkscrew? Nowhere. Fortunately, the internet is full of handy ways to open a bottle of wine with a screwdriver, screws or a knife. Warning: it doesn’t work, and there’s a good chance you’ll break the bottle (then the shards will be everywhere, including in your wine). The only kitchen hack that’s actually useful: always buy wine with a screw cap, problem solved.
