7 reasons why you really shouldn’t bring food home as a holiday souvenir

Heinz mayo mousse

At the restaurant where you’re on holiday, the wine tastes amazing, and you want to take that feeling of enjoying a liqueur at sunset home with you too. And so almost everyone has a few obscure bottles tucked away in the pantry. And those delicious cheeses? They disappeared into the green bin long ago, because they became furry and blue in no time. These people know exactly: it was delicious on holiday, but a huge disappointment at home.

Fragrant

‘At the farmers’ market, we bought some authentic blue cheeses. Lovely for home! But when we opened the camper door at the end of the day, with the cheeses having waited for us in the fridge all day, the smell hit us in the face. We had to sleep in that stench for another three days.’

Dish soap

‘The owner of our agriturismo made his own limoncello. Delicious! So when we left, we bought a few bottles for home. And one for the people who had looked after the guinea pig. But in our backyard, that drink tasted more like Dupro lemon. So sour! So disgusting! There I was, pouring thirty euros’ worth of liqueur down the drain.’

Red trail

‘I was allowed to bring two bottles of red wine back from South Africa, no more. Not in hand luggage, obviously; they had to go in the suitcase. So first we had to choose two bottles from all our holiday treasures, then we wrapped them in bubble wrap and bath towels and hid them deep in the suitcase. But when my luggage came rolling along on the conveyor belt, I saw it immediately: I was leaving a trail of red wine behind me. Never again.’

Filling

‘Fudge from Scotland? I couldn’t get enough of it. I took kilos home, supposedly as gifts, but I liked it so much that I ate it all myself. I regretted that during my dentist’s check-up: three cavities. Ouch!’

Herbal tea

‘Have you ever tried explaining to Chinese customs that those plastic bags full of dried green leaves in your suitcase aren’t drugs, but medicinal herbal tea? I say: good luck.’

Mayo mousse

‘I really liked that mayo from a spray can that you can buy in American supermarkets. And I thought my housemates might appreciate it too. They thought otherwise. It also didn’t help that the journey hadn’t exactly done the cans any good. Something about solid and liquid substances and a whole lot of mess.’

Rumbling guts

‘Just before leaving for the airport, we had a lovely fish dinner at a restaurant in the harbor, overlooking the Greek bay. Wonderful! But on the plane, my stomach started rumbling, and my intestines didn’t agree with it at all either. I spent most of the flight on the toilet, sorry to the other passengers. Horrible!’

Expensive joke

‘A friend wanted to bring caviar back from her business trip. She just hadn’t taken into account that you’re allowed to import a maximum of 125 grams. That was unfortunate at customs.’
